Handmade Jewellery Australia- what it means to be handmade.

By definition, handmade jewellery is literally just that, made by the “hands” of an artisan or maker. The pieces are soldered, sawed, carved, and shaped without the use of manufacturing machinery. A machine can crank out hundreds of units per hour while an individual can only make a finite quantity at a time.
Still, most people don’t understand the true value of handmade jewellery compared to its mass-produced counterparts. There are many reasons why handcrafted jewelry is more of an investment than pieces that are produced in mass quantities.
Since there are no machines involved, it takes an incredible amount of time to produce just a single piece of handmade jewellery.
As a designer, I often spend days if not weeks designing a piece of jewellery. Once the design is complete, it can take many many weeks to make. That’s a lot of devotion, care, and attention to your piece of jewellery.
In almost every case, the materials involved in a handmade piece are of stellar quality. It’s difficult to regulate or even know exactly what alloys are used in mass production factories where unexpected nickel or other metals can cause unwanted reactions. Handmade materials are generally sourced from highly reputable suppliers making handmade jewellery pure and free from unwanted alloys.
When you think about it, handmade pieces are always unique in their own way. No two pieces of handmade jewellery are exactly the same. Even if the handmade creation is part of an edition, you’re not likely to bump into someone wearing the same piece of jewellery as you at a party. Even when it’s the same design, your piece will still vary slightly to another person who has the same product. From the finishes to the lines, they are always differences, even if so slight. It’s something just for you, every single time.
So when you consider purchasing a handmade piece of jewellery, remember that even though the piece may be a little more costly than a mass-produced design, you are supporting something bigger than yourself. You should feel really good about your purchase knowing that you have a special piece of art made with so much love.
Buying a LBD DESIGN is supporting a dying art, and supporting ethically sourced and produced jewellery.
In my opinion, although handmade jewellery doesn’t have the pristine finish that can be made by a machine, it has the quality materials and durability that machine made jewellery just doesn’t have.
